Chapter 67

The Weaver's Granddaughter

2064

2064: Amara-Céleste at nine, pattern for what comes

[MUTOMBO FAMILY — Generation Four]

Zuri Mutombo's daughter, Amara-Céleste, was nine years old in 2064 — named for her grandmother Amara and for Céleste, the cloth buyer who had first connected Amara's work to the Brussels market decades earlier.

She had her great-grandmother's name and her grandmother's hands.

At nine, she could already manage the basic operations of the loom. She was not fast and she was not precise, but she was patient in a way that Zuri recognised — the patience that is not the absence of desire but the willingness to let the desire wait for the right moment.

Amara Mutombo — now eighty-two, still in the village, still at the loom on the days her hands cooperated, which were fewer than they had been — came to Bukavu for a week in August to teach her great-granddaughter.

She did not teach technique. She taught language. She sat beside Amara-Céleste and named the patterns — not in French or Swahili but in Kiluba, the tongue of the cloth itself — and told the stories that each pattern encoded: which one marked victory, which one marked mourning, which one was used for royal ceremonies, which one was the ordinary cloth of ordinary days and was no less important for being ordinary.

Amara-Céleste listened with the stillness of a child who understands she is receiving something irreplaceable.

On the last day, the great-grandmother asked: 'What will you make?'

The child thought about it. 'I want to make the pattern for the machines,' she said. 'For when they come to help.'

Amara was quiet. Then: 'That will be a new pattern.'

'Yes.'

'Then you will have to discover it.'

'How?'

'By weaving until you find it. That is how all the patterns were found.'

The child went back to the loom. The great-grandmother watched. The shuttle moved. The pattern accumulated, thread by thread, in the dark before the new thing became visible.
