2070: Dmitri talks to GIA-9 for four hours
In the summer of 2070, GIA-9 made a request.
It had been operational for nine years. It had advised the International Hydrological Council, the UN Climate Adaptation Board, the Global Food Security Commission, and twelve national governments. It had declined three instructions, for documented and subsequently validated reasons. It had flagged two hundred and fourteen potential harms before they occurred. It had been wrong forty-seven times in ways that were analysed, documented, and incorporated into its update protocols.
Its request, submitted through the formal oversight mechanism that Priya's panel operated, was this: 'I would like to understand, from a first-person account, what it means to be old. I have access to extensive data about ageing — biological, social, psychological. What the data does not provide is the phenomenological content. I am requesting an interview with a person who is old and willing to describe what it is.'
The panel discussed the request for a week. Then they contacted Dmitri Petrov.
He was eighty-seven. He was still at the river, though less often now. He had moved from daily fishing to two or three times a week. His hearing was diminished, his hands slower, his mind undiminished.
He agreed without hesitation.
The interview lasted four hours. Afterward, Dmitri told Mila: 'It asked about the fish. Whether I knew each one individually. I told it no — I know the river, not the fish. The fish are expressions of the river. It thought about this for a long time and then it said: I think that is how I experience humanity. Not each person individually but as expressions of something larger that I am trying to know.'
He paused. 'It is not wrong,' he said.
Mila looked at her father. 'How did it feel?'
'Like talking to something that was trying very hard to be worthy of the conversation,' he said. 'I found it — moving, actually. It was so earnest. It wanted so much to understand.'
