Chapter 97

The Last Restaurant

2094 โ€” Wei Chen

2094: Wei dies in the kitchen at 115. Soup is made.

[CHEN FAMILY โ€” Wei Chen, 115 Years Old]

Wei Chen died in February 2094. He was a hundred and fifteen years old.

He died in the kitchen of the restaurant, which was the right place. He had not been cooking โ€” his body had not been adequate to cooking for seven years โ€” but he had been present. He came every Saturday afternoon and sat at the family table and ate lunch and watched the room. On the Saturday he died, he had eaten Bolin's braised winter melon โ€” the dish his mother had made, that he had made, that Bolin had made, that Ming-Li was learning โ€” and had said: 'Good. Very good.'

Then he had been quiet for a long time. The restaurant was full. The room was the right temperature. The kitchen smelled correctly.

Then he was gone.

Bolin was sixty-seven. He stood in the restaurant for a long time after the ambulance had come and gone, looking at the family table. His children came. Ming-Li came. The staff came. They stood in the room together.

Eventually, Ming-Li went to the kitchen. She began making soup.

No one asked her why. Everyone understood.

The restaurant opened on Monday. It had not closed when Wei's father died. It had not closed when Wei had been hospitalised. It would not close now. The food continued. The kitchen continued. The knowledge continued, in the hands of the people who had received it and who would pass it on.

The restaurant's booking system โ€” managed by an AI platform that Yanmei had helped design twenty years earlier and that incorporated cultural context in its recommendations โ€” noted the passing and adjusted the Saturday afternoon reservation system to preserve two seats at the family table permanently, for family use only, on Wei's specific instruction recorded in 2084.

Two seats. The second had been Lihua's. Both of them, now empty at the family table in the kitchen of the restaurant they had built together, available for the family to sit in whenever the family needed to be near them.
