Kamala Sharma began her doctoral research at the Pune Institute in 2072, continuing the river monitoring work that was now four generations deep in her family. Her thesis was titled: 'Ninety-Five Years of Daily Observation of the Ganga at Varanasi: What the Long View Shows That the Models Cannot.'

The ninety-five years were compiled from Rajan's records (1964–2063), Priya's additions (1989–present), and Kamala's own records (2055–present). The dataset was unique in the world: no other river had been monitored with this combination of scientific precision and cultural continuity for this length of time.

What the long view showed was this: the river's behaviour was not captured by any of the models built on shorter time horizons. There were cycles — forty-year cycles, sixty-year cycles — that only became visible at the ninety-five-year scale. The climate models built on twenty or thirty years of data were, from the perspective of the ninety-five-year view, like weather forecasts: accurate in the short term, missing the structural patterns.

The finding had implications for the AGI water management systems. Priya brought it to the International Hydrological Council. GIA-9 incorporated the long-cycle data into its modelling framework. The next generation of water management recommendations was, according to the council's independent reviewers, measurably more accurate than the previous generation.

'Your great-grandfather's notebooks changed how the AI manages water,' Priya told Kamala.

'His notebooks and yours and mine,' Kamala said.

'Yes. All of us. The machine has power. We gave it knowledge. There's a difference.'

'Baba always says that.'

'Baba is right. He usually is.'

Kamala smiled. 'Don't tell him.'
