Chapter 78

The Inheritance of Hands

2073 — Tuan, 85

2073: Tuan retires, mangroves on the horizon

[NGUYEN FAMILY — Tuan and Bao]

Tuan Nguyen retired from the factory in 2073. He was eighty-five years old. He had been in manufacturing for sixty-one years. He retired on a Friday. On Monday he went to the factory to watch the morning shift and was politely asked by the shift supervisor — a young woman of twenty-three who had joined the factory four years earlier — whether he needed assistance finding his way out.

He left, smiling, and went home to Linh, who was eighty years old and managing the coastal mangrove restoration project from an office in their apartment because the field work had become beyond her physical capacity but the coordination and the knowledge had not.

They sat on the balcony in the afternoon and looked at the sea. The mangroves south of Da Nang were a dark line on the horizon — eighteen kilometres of restored coastal buffer that had not existed when they arrived in Da Nang in 2028.

'We built that,' Linh said.

'You built that,' Tuan said. 'I built processors.'

'You built the thing that built the processors that powered the models that optimised the mangrove restoration plan,' Linh said. 'It's all the same chain.'

He thought about this. He had always thought about things with his hands — the solution arriving through the fingers rather than through the head. He was eighty-five and his hands still had the knowledge in them, the muscle memory of sixty-one years of precise work. He could no longer do the work. The knowledge was still there, in the hands, waiting.

Bao came in August for a long visit. He brought Ji-young and the children. Lan was twenty-two, studying materials science — of course. Quang was nineteen, studying environmental engineering — drawn to the mangroves he had visited every summer of his childhood.

Tuan held the children's hands at the dinner table and thought about the things that pass through hands. Not just skills. Everything.
