Convert .cdr to .iso on Mac OSX Leopard

1 - Go into Disk Utility and highlight the CD which is in the drive.

2 - Click “New Image” in the toolbar up above.

3 - Image format should be “DVD/CD master”.  Name it whatever you want and save it where you like.

4 - Wait.

5 - When that is done, open up your Terminal.

6 - Goto the path where you saved it (ie:  “cd ~/Desktop”).

7 - Issue this command:

hdiutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o FILENAME.iso FILENAME.cdr

8 -  Rejoice and burn your ISO.  Or just burn your CDR since Mac’s support that.

Music class and first presentation day

We are conducting music classes for kids nowadays and we decided to conduct individual presentation days once in a while.

The first presentation day happened 3 weeks ago and each one of the kids were asked to sing one song that they learnt in the class and one another song of their choice.

The songs were recorded and converted to MP3 using Audacity sound recorder. The server where the file is hosted is not a streaming server. Please download the file and then play it.

The following are the links to their songs:

  1. Anusha's personal choice - from the movie Taare Zameen

  2. Anusha's song learnt in the class

  3. Dolly's personal choice - from the movie Taare Zameen

  4. Dolly's song learnt in the class

  5. Laya's personal choice - from the movie Dasavatharam

  6. Laya's song learnt in the class

  7. Meghana's personal choice - Sloka learnt earlier from a different teacher

  8. Meghana's song learnt in the class

  9. Nandini's personal choice - English song - The more we get together

  10. Nandini's song learnt in the class

  11. Raghu's personal choice - not his first or best choice

  12. Raghu's song learnt in the class

Quick solution to Ajax caching issue

I got this quick fix solution to Ajax caching issue from the following site. Thought of sharing this.

http://radio.javaranch.com/pascarello/2005/10/21/1129908221072.html

The question: The Ajax request is grabbing the cached page from the previous request, how do I stop this from happening? Well I have seen some fancy approaches by people, but there is one easy solution that works: a random query string value appended to the request.

So how and why does this work. Well it simple terms, when the browser looks at the destination, if it has a match, then it uses the data it has. Now this is great for when you are going to a static website, but since we are looking for new data, it sucks. By appending a random value to our parameters that we are sending back, it forces the browser to say, "Stop the press! We got new info here! Lets go get the data!"

Srirangapatnam and Mysore trip

We went on a trip to the historical city and erstwhile capital of the Mysore residency Srirangapatna and Mysore last weekend. Being a history lover and an ardent fan of Tippu sultan I was able to visit the grave were he is put to rest. We went to Srirangaptna Sri Ranganatha temple for which Tippu sultan and Hyder Ali his father were patrons.

Tamil new year 2008 (Sarvadhari)

Tamil new year wish Today the April 13th 2008 is Tamil new years day and it marks the beginning of a new year. The Tamil Calendar follows a 60 year cycle just like the Chinese calendar and a good write up about this is available in Wikipedia with the topic Tamil Calendar. Each of the 60 years have a name. The name of this year is Sarvadhari.

How did it all start?

My journey on the internet started 15 years ago with a free introductory page on Tripod when I was located in India. And then after I moved to US, I was able to host a server at my home and also register the domain and use it for personal use. My first page could still be found at http://thinkman.tripod.com/ , the original page is somewhat broken due to tripod javascript addons.

Private bank vs Nationalized bank

Everyone I heard were boasting regarding the awesome services provided by the private and foreign banks and how the Nationalized banks do not care that much. I was caught by surprise when I did not notice a big variation in the experience I had. The nationalized banks actually provided better service for my needs.
