Tamil new year 2008 (Sarvadhari)

Tamil new year wish Today the April 13th 2008 is Tamil new years day and it marks the beginning of a new year. The Tamil Calendar follows a 60 year cycle just like the Chinese calendar and a good write up about this is available in Wikipedia with the topic Tamil Calendar. Each of the 60 years have a name. The name of this year is Sarvadhari. It is considered auspicious and good to see gold and silver coins and fruits and nuts spread in a plate thru a mirror. A brief description of activities in the early morning is described in Ambi Mama - India blog. The local newspper also had a column with the title An aura of auspiciousness which describes the way the Tamil new year is celebrated.

The Tamil New year also marks the start of the ripening of the summer season fruits what is traditionally called the mukkani (three fruits) maa (mango), palaa (jack fruit) and vaalai (banana).

We had a simple celebration at our home which you can find in our Tamil New year 2008 picture album.

With festival comes festive food. Special food for this festival is usually the Sweet mango pachchadi and Poli.
